Etymology [Word Origin] Convention 2022

Rules:


XOBDO.ORG adopts the following Etymology or Origin of Words Convention:

A) If a word comes from another language without any change, only abbreviation of the language or language family will be written.
Format: lc
where lc= language code or language family code as per Table-1
e.g কলম Origin: ফা

B) If a word comes from another language with some changes, then the original word will be written followed by the abbreviation of the language or language family
and a dot.
Format: lc. ow
where lc= language code or language family code as per Table-1, ow= original word
e.g. বজাৰ Origin:ফা. বাজাৰ

C) If a word is a combination of two other words from different languages then first break the word and write it along with the languages separated by a plus signs.
Format: lc1. ow1 + lc2. ow2[+...]
where lc1, lc2, ...= language codes or language family codes as per Table-1, ow1, ow2,...= original words
e.g. গড়কাপ্তানী Origin: অ. গড় + ইং.কেপ্তেইন

D) If any specific language cannot be specified for a word in Rule A, , B and C above, then the language family can be mentioned.
e.g. দঞিপল Origin: তিব

E) If a word has more than one theories of origin, then all theories will be written separated by semi-colons.
Format: t1;t2[;...]
where t1, t2... = theories of word origin written by following Rule A, B, C, or D.
e.g. বিহু Origin: সং. বিষুৱ; ব. বৈচাগু; ব. বৈখু; দে. বিচু

F) The source of the theory will be mentioned after the theory within brackets.
Format: t1 (s1); t2 (s2) [;...]
where t1, t2 ... theories, s1, s2,...= source code as per Table-2 below.
e.g. বজাৰ Origin: ফা. বাজাৰ (হেম৯৮)
